June 2025: Google Meet and Google Workspace Update Recap

June brought a lot of new features to Google Meet and Google Workspace, ranging from deeper AI integration across your Workspace apps to upgrades in meeting security and collaboration. Updates include more flexible content sharing in Google Meet, Gemini's new ability to generate editable charts in Google Sheets and AI summaries for a wider range of file types directly within Google Chat.

Dive in to explore these as well as all of the other updates that arrived throughout the month.

Google Meet

At the start of last month, the ability to share content directly into calls via the ๐Ÿ’ป meeting room's HDMI cable was introduced. This means you can now present both from Google Meet Hardware into Webex meetings and from supported Cisco devices into Google Meet calls. This makes it even easier to collaborate and share ๐Ÿ”‘ key information with clients, partners and colleagues across platforms without barriers.

A short video that begins with a user enabling the โ€œShare content from cameraโ€ setting within Google Meet on the web. Then they press the presentation button and choose to share their camera as a presentation in the call.

There were also several new feature updates to Google Meetโ€™s content and screensharing capabilities. They include being able to present a ๐Ÿ“ท camera feed as content (for alternate angles or prerecorded content), โšก faster screensharing, improved ๐Ÿ“น video quality for shared content, a larger screensharing ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ button and โฏ๏ธ automatic resumption of previous presentations. The ability to stream camera content opens up new possibilities for using external production systems, allowing for more types of content and multiple camera sources.

To enhance meeting ๐Ÿ” security, new controls were made available to manage who can request to join your Google Meet calls. The new update allows hosts to prevent ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿšช knocking (requests to join the meeting) from anyone with just the meeting link, limiting the number of requests exclusively to people who are explicitly invited, even if meeting access is set to โ€œTrustedโ€ or โ€œRestrictedโ€. As the host, you can configure this setting from the ๐Ÿ“… Calendar invitation before the meeting or via the Host controls during the meeting.

A short video featuring two screens. The top screen displays a static Google Meet call on a TV, showing five participants (one presenting content) with accompanying camera and speaker hardware. The bottom screen, a tablet, shows emoji reactions and call controls on the right and the presented content on the left. The user then clicks the "full screen" button to expand the content to fill the screen and clicks it again to return to the main view.

Google Meet's Companion Mode began its rollout to ๐Ÿ“ฑ iOS and Android tablets, providing more options for how you can participate in ๐Ÿ’ป meetings. This means you can now use your tablet to ๐Ÿ™‹ raise your hand, ๐Ÿ’ฌ exchange chat messages, ๐Ÿ”Ž zoom in on presented content, ๐Ÿ‘‹ check into the meeting and much more. The addition of tablet support offers greater flexibility, allowing you to use more of your available devices to access these convenient functions during a call.

๐Ÿ’ก For an overview of everything related to companion mode, take a look at our our complete guide.

Additionally, the ability to ๐ŸŽจ customise the appearance of ๐Ÿ’ฌ captions in Google Meet also began rolling out, allowing you to personalise the font size, font type, colour and background colour of captions to suit your preferences. You can adjust these settings during or before your meeting to improve accessibility and clarity. Your choices will remain for future meetings and only affect your view; other participants on the call can set their own preferences.

Google Meetโ€™s automatic artefact generation feature was previously only available in ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง English. However, starting last month, if the host's preferred language is set to ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French, ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช German, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italian, ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japanese, ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Korean, ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น Portuguese or ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spanish, then ๐Ÿ“น meeting recordings, ๐Ÿ“œ transcripts and โœ๏ธ โ€œTake notes for meโ€ will now be automatically generated in that language by default. This eliminates manual language configuration and ensures artefacts are always in the correct language. Meeting hosts and co-hosts can adjust these settings from the Calendar invitation or disable generation during the call.

๐Ÿ’ก Explore our blog post for a deeper understanding of meeting artefacts and how to use them.

Lastly, studio lighting in Google Meet has been expanded to support both ๐ŸŒ web and ๐Ÿ“ฑ mobile devices. The feature helps improve the appearance of your meeting space by replicating studio-quality lighting that can auto-adjust during ๐Ÿ“น video calls to keep lighting optimal. It can also be manually calibrated for the ultimate level of control.

Google Workspace

Google Chat

Instead of marking an entire Google Chat conversation as unread, Google introduced the ability for you to now be able to mark individual ๐Ÿงต threads in a space as unread. Marking just a single thread as unread can be useful in allowing for a more precise reminder of where you intend to return.

A short video showing the Google Chat app interface with the Comeen Workplace chat open. The user asks to book a desk and Comeen responds with an interactive booking system. The user types "book a meeting room tomorrow 2pm" and sends it to Comeen as a chat message; Comeen processes the request, provides an available roomand the user clicks "Book this room", receiving a confirmation message from Comeen.

Also, Comeen launched its ๐Ÿค– Workplace AI Agent into Google Chat. This AI-assisted integration lets you book spaces and ask office-related questions by โœ๏ธ writing natural language prompts from your ๐Ÿ’ฌ Chat conversations. You can now book desks and meeting rooms with prompts such as โ€œBook a desk for 3pm tomorrowโ€ or ask questions like โ€œWhere can I print on the 3rd floor?โ€. This helps streamline booking processes and saves ๐Ÿ•‘ time by avoiding app switching or manual searches.

The final update to Google Chat in June means that, in addition to summaries of Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files, Gemini in Chat can now provide summaries of additional file types when they are shared in a chat message as a Drive link. These file types are:

  • ๐Ÿ“„ PDFs
  • ๐Ÿข Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • ๐Ÿ“Š CSV
  • โœ๏ธ TXT
  • ๐Ÿค ZIP files

Clicking the โ€œSummarize this fileโ€ button will give you a quick overview of the file's content without needing to open each document to see what it's about or to leave the Chat app. Reducing such context-switching can save you time and make it easier to keep up with shared information.

Gmail

An image of two phone screens displayed side-by-side, both showing the Gmail interface. On both, "project alpha" was typed into the search bar. On the left, the user has selected the "most recent" search system whilst on the right the "most relevant" search system is in use. It's evident that the two lists are different: the most recent email mentioning "project alpha" appears on the left, whereas starred emails mentioning "project alpha" from several days earlier are at the top of the search on the right.

The single June update to โœ‰๏ธ Gmail introduced at the end of the month saw Google roll out a new sorting option for search results: most relevant, in addition to the existing most recent. The new โ€œmost relevantโ€ sorting method prioritises results by considering various factors, such as:

  • โŒ› Recency of emails
  • ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ Most-clicked emails
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Frequent contacts

Youโ€™ll have the flexibility to ๐Ÿ” switch between these two sorting methods, allowing for a more tailored and efficient search experience within Gmail.

Google Docs

Last month, Google introduced the ability to leverage the enhanced security of ๐Ÿ”’ client-side encrypted (CSE) Google Docs without sacrificing collaborative features as the ability to make suggestions within these highly secure ๐Ÿ“„ documents is now supported. This means that you can utilise more of the ๐Ÿ‘ฅ collaborative tools of Google Docs whilst maintaining the increased security of CSE, whereby only you control the ๐Ÿ”‘ keys that can decrypt your ๐Ÿ“‚ files.

Gemini in Google Docs also gained support for over 20 additional languages on ๐Ÿ“ฑ Android devices. Now, whilst on the go, you can interact with Gemini to generate document summaries, ๐Ÿ”Ž find key details and ask questions about your content directly from your mobile device; supported languages include ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italian, ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japanese, ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Ukrainian and more.

A short video showing a user typing a prompt into Imagen 4โ€™s prompt bar in Spanish to ask for pictures of an egg carton. They then select the option to generate a landscape image before clicking โ€œGenerarโ€ (Spanish for โ€œGenerateโ€). Previews of four images are shown to the user based on their prompt; the user selects one and a large preview of it is shown on the left with the option to โ€œInsertarโ€ (Spanish for โ€œInsertโ€).

Googleโ€™s new AI ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ image generation model, Imagen 4, was released into ๐Ÿ“„ Docs, ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Slides and ๐Ÿ“น Vids last month. The latest model includes the addition of multilingual support, enabling you to generate custom images from โœ๏ธ written prompts in over 20 languages and with higher-fidelity rendering of text in output images.

Google Sheets

A video displaying a Google Sheets file opened with a spreadsheet of data on the left; the Gemini side panel is on the right. The user types "Chart category by average purchase amount" into the prompt bar. Gemini generates a preview of a bar chart along with a list of key observations below, which the user inserts. The user changes a bar's colour and then updates the spreadsheet data which automatically reflects in the bar graph.

Improving on Gemini's ability to generate static ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ image charts, โœจ Gemini can nowย create fully โœ๏ธ editable charts using your Sheets data. It can generate ๐Ÿ“Š bar, ๐Ÿฅง pie and ๐Ÿ“ˆ line graphs depending on your specific requirements. These charts can now automatically regenerate and update to reflect changes in spreadsheet data, optimising workflows and saving ๐Ÿ•‘ time. Once you approve and insert the graph into your file, all aspects of the chart, such as titles and ๐ŸŽจ colours, are fully editable.

In addition, Gemini's ability to generate ๐Ÿ“Š charts and ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ insights in Google Sheets was expanded to support an additional seven languages. This means you can now interact with Gemini to gain insights about your data โ€“ such as best-performing products โ€“ in more languages. The supported languages are ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French, ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช German, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italian, ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japanese, ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Korean, ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น Portuguese and ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spanish.

The capabilities of the Google Sheets API were enhanced to now include support for ๐Ÿ“‚ file and ๐Ÿ‘ค people ๐Ÿค“๐ŸŸ smart chips. This update enables developers to ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป build more dynamic and connected workflows by being able to ๐Ÿ“– read and โœ๏ธ write these interactive chips using code.

The new AI function began rolling out last month, bringing instant access to โœจ Gemini directly from any cell in Google Sheets. You can invoke the AI function by ๐Ÿ“ข calling โ€œ=AI( )โ€ and using it to generate text based on data or cell contents โ€“ such as an โœ‰๏ธ email tailored to recorded user feedback โ€“ or to summarise and categorise data in the spreadsheet, which can help you more quickly sift through data and see patterns emerge.

Google Drive

A short video showing the Google Drive interface. Several files are in a list and the user clicks a button at the top that says โ€œCatch me upโ€. The right-hand side panel opens up and, in it, Gemini produces an overview of recent changes to various files the user has previously accessed.

At the start of the month, Google began rolling out a new Gemini feature called๐Ÿƒ โ€œCatch Me Upโ€ in Google Drive. This feature is designed to help you stay informed and in sync by providing a concise ๐Ÿ“ summary of all changes made to ๐Ÿ“‚ files since you last ๐Ÿ‘€ viewed them. It helps you stay on top of whatโ€™s happening across multiple documents, seeing who made the changes and what specifically was updated from one view. This includes โœ๏ธ edits made in Docs and ๐Ÿ’ฌ comments added to ๐Ÿ“„ Docs, Sheets and Slides files.

Automated โœจ Gemini-generated summary cards were introduced for PDF files opened within Google Drive. These cards will provide an instant ๐Ÿ“ overview of the PDF's contents; they will be displayed to the side of the file, similar to comments. This update can save you time by offering a detailed summary without the need to โœ๏ธ write a text prompt to Gemini. The cards will also present contextually-relevant, ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ clickable Gemini actions โ€“ such as โ€œDraft a sample proposalโ€ โ€“ accelerating engagement with Gemini's capabilities by making options readily available upon opening the PDF.

The Google Drive ๐Ÿ“น video player experience on ๐Ÿ“ฑ Android was also updated to match the latest ๐ŸŒ web experience. Updates to the app include a more modern look, in line with Google Material Design 3, and improved controls for โฉ fast forwarding and โช rewinding videos.

A short video showing a mobile phone screen with the user in the Google Drive app. The user clicks the upload button in the bottom-right corner and a list menu appears. The user clicks "Upload a file" and chooses an image of a dog. The user is given the option to change the fileโ€™s name and upload location. After uploading, the app returns to the Google Drive homepage, showing a progress bar at the bottom. The user clicks to expand the progress bar to reveal the Upload Tab where the uploaded file is visible.

Similarly, the Google Drive mobile app received another update, bringing multiple changes to the file upload experience across both ๐Ÿ“ฑ Android and iOS. Specifically, the ๐Ÿ“‚ initial upload screen, ๐Ÿƒ progress bar and ๐Ÿ“‘ Upload tab were all modified to help improve your upload experience.

The capabilities of Google Drive's ๐Ÿ”‘ security tools were expanded to enable admins to ๐Ÿ‘€ view information about usersโ€™ ๐Ÿ”Ž searches. The security investigation tool now logs search queries and the returned resources which ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป admins can use to identify suspicious behavioural patterns. These logs are also accessible via API.

To ensure you have a seamless experience when working with Microsoft Office files, Office ๐Ÿ“„ documents that have PDF ๐Ÿ“ files embedded inside are now supported when opened directly in ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ Google Drive. This update means that you should have a much smoother, integrated experience as youโ€™re less likely to run into issues when trying to ๐Ÿ‘€ view these specific files.

To end the month, Google announced new ๐Ÿ” FINRA-compliant solutions for ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ Google Drive and ๐Ÿ“… Google Calendar to help you stay in line with FINRA regulations.

Google Forms

The ability for Gemini to generate summaries of your ๐Ÿ“‹ Google Form responses was introduced last month. By analysing the form's title, description, questions and submitted answers, it can now highlight the core themes and findings of the responses. This can help save you ๐Ÿ• time, offering quick insights into both short and long โœ๏ธ text-based responses within Google Forms.

A short video that starts with a pop-up dialog that says โ€œHello, Erica. Letโ€™s start creatingโ€. There are various pre-written prompts the user can start with. Instead, the user writes their prompt and asks Gemini for a form that customers can use to request quotes โ€“ and the user links a document which Gemini can use to reference actual products. The video then shows the created Google Form.

Additionally, you'll also soon be able to save time by leveraging โœจ Gemini to create bespoke forms as โ€œHelp me createโ€ began rolling out in Forms last month. To use the feature, describe the form you need using a ๐Ÿ’ฌ text prompt. You can also provide additional context by referencing existing ๐Ÿ“ƒ Docs, Sheets, Slides and PDF files. Gemini will then generate a draft for you based on your request which you can choose to โœ๏ธ edit or โœ… insert.

๐Ÿ’ก Note: the Gemini-generated response summaries and โ€œHelp me createโ€ features are currently only available in English.

To enhance ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป administrative control and minimise potential data exfiltration risks, new admin โš™๏ธ settings were added to Google Forms that will enable you to control precisely whether ๐Ÿ‘ฅ users within your domain can respond to forms created externally or if they can share forms with external recipients.

Pre-existing Google Forms have gained the option for form creators to restrict who can respond. This was added to new forms created since December. With this setting, the list of respondents can be limited to specific users, groups or target audiences.

Gemini

If you are ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป working with your code within the โœจ Gemini app, Google introduced a way for you to more easily upload that code to provide context for your request โ€“ including by connecting your GitHub repo. Youโ€™re able to import from both public and private repos and ask Gemini to explain it, improve it, debug it or generate new code.

In addition to text, images and other supported ๐Ÿ“‚ files, the Gemini mobile app gained support for uploading ๐Ÿ“น video files directly from your phone to the app. You can now leverage โœจ Gemini โœจ to perform a variety of tasks, including asking Gemini to summarise the ๐ŸŽฌ video content, posing specific questions about the video or even using the video as a reference point for other tasks, providing more context to your Gemini prompts.

At the end of the month, scheduled actions were introduced in Gemini, enabling it to act as your daily personal AI assistant on both the ๐ŸŒ web and in the ๐Ÿ“ฑ mobile app. This allows you to automate tailored updates, reminders and routine tasks. For example, you can now have Gemini provide daily morning briefings based on your ๐Ÿ“… calendar, offer daily rundowns of top ๐Ÿ“ฐ news on specific topics or summarise your unread โœ‰๏ธ emails each morning.

Google Vids

Veo 3, Googleโ€™s latest video-generation model, was added to ๐Ÿ“น Google Vids in June. In addition to improved video quality, Veo 3 will also generate ๐Ÿ”Š audio as part of the eight-second ๐ŸŽฌ scene based on your written text prompt.

A short video of a user in Google Vids. The โ€œGetting startedโ€ menu is visible and the user clicks on the option to import slides. The user selects a Slides file and is shown a preview of all the slides in the file and is able to select or deselect specific ones they want to import. The user proceeds to import all slides. The presentationโ€™s slides are then converted into a ready to edit video, showing a preview of one scene and an editorโ€™s timeline at the bottom of the screen.

Another feature addition introduced last month to Google Vids was the โ€œImport Slidesโ€ option, which lets you convert your Slides presentations into ๐Ÿ“น videos. Once you have selected and imported your slides, Vids will automatically create ๐ŸŽฌ scenes โ€“ based on each slideโ€™s โœ๏ธ text, ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ images and other elements โ€“ which you can then โœ๏ธ edit further.

NotebookLM

Context-Aware Access provides ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป admins control over which users can access different Workspace apps based on the context of the userโ€™s request, based on factors such as device type or location. Whilst ๐Ÿ” Context-Aware Access (CAA) policies for NotebookLM were introduced earlier this year, admins can now also specify these policies for the NotebookLM mobile app.

Google Groups

Towards the end of the month, Google announced that starting on 15th September 2025, Google Groups will no longer support custom roles for configuring who can manage and view members, nor the option for the entire organisation to manage members. Existing custom roles will be discontinued by 5th January 2026; Google recommends the use of pre-built roles instead.

The new ๐Ÿ”’ โ€œLockedโ€ feature for Google Groups became generally available at the end of the month, enabling admins to restrict the ability for others to make changes to the group attributes.

Google Admin Panel

A new data set called the โ€œPolicy compliance log eventsโ€ is now accessible via the ๐Ÿ” security investigation tool for organisations on the Workspace Enterprise Plus and Frontline Plus tier. This enables admins to generate detailed ๐Ÿ“‘ audit reports which can be used to verify that data region settings are in full compliance with internal policies and external regulatory guidelines.

A short video shows the Google Workspace Admin panel. From the left-hand menu, the user clicks "Data", then selects "Compliance" from the dropdown, followed by "Data regions". On the right, the user clicks "Data at Rest" and changes "No preference" to "United States", then clicks "Save". The user then proceeds to configure "Data processing" settings. Then the user goes back and clicks "Advanced settings", selecting "Gemini for Google Workspace" from the list.

Additionally, for organisations on Workspace Enterprise Plus, ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป admins can now set data region policies that will govern โœจ Gemini features in Google Workspace apps. This allows you to specify ๐Ÿ“ locations (๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EU, ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฒ US or both) for data at rest and data processing for Gemini functions such as โœ๏ธ โ€œHelp me writeโ€ in Gmail. Admins can configure these โš™๏ธ settings by organisational units to help ensure regulatory requirements are met.

At the end of the month, Google Workspace made its Multi-Party Approval (MPA) security feature more flexible. MPA requires a second ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป admin to approve certain sensitive actions taken by another admin. Now, after last month's update, you can choose exactly which admin actions need โœ” ๏ธapproval and even set different rules for actions taken via the API versus the admin console. This allows for more precise ๐Ÿ” security controls and helps define what counts as a high-risk action.

Google Workspace Add-on

Google AI Ultra had previously only been available to consumer Google accounts; however, that changed when Google launched Google AI Ultra for Business at the end of June. ๐Ÿ’ผ This new Google Workspace add-on provides access to higher AI usage limits, the latest AI models and new AI ๐Ÿงฐ tools:

  • Flow โ€“ an AI tool for filmmaking
  • Whisk โ€“ an AI tool to create images and videos
  • Project Mariner โ€“ a tool to help automate research and data entry (currently only in the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US)
